MAY L. CAIN
Ms. Cain is a former Miami-Dade County Court Judge who was appointed to the bench. She comes from a long line of attorneys from Chicago, Illinois, and for many years practiced with her father, attorney William A. Cain at the law firm of Cain & Cain in Miami. Keeping it all in the family, she now practices with her husband and law partner, William J. Snihur, Jr. Ms. Cain was admitted to practice law in Florida in 1980 and is also admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th and 11th Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. She is an AV Preeminent® rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, achieving the rating agency’s highest marks for both comptency and ethics, and has been named one of South Florida’s Top Lawyers. Ms. Cain focuses her practice in the areas of family law, child custody, domestic violence, dissolution of marriage, prenuptial and post nuptial agreements, civil litigation, criminal law and appeals.
She obtained her Juris Doctor Degree in 1980 from DePaul University School of Law, and was also a visiting student at the University of Miami School of Law. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1977 from Northwestern University.
Ms. Cain is a Past President of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, Miami-Dade Chapter, and was the second woman in the history of the Florida Bar to chair the Editorial Board of the Florida Bar Journal and News, following many years of service on the Editorial Board. She has served on the Florida Bar’s Grievance Committee, on the Executive Council of the General Practice Section of the Florida Bar, and has served on the Family Law Section Rules Committee, Lawyer Referral Service Committee and the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. She has also served as a Hearing Officer for the Miami-Dade County School Board.
She is an educator and has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at Barry University since 1986. She created a Family Law class for the university and teaches on many legal subjects. She has been a guest lecturer for continuing legal education and continuing mediation education programs. Ms. Cain has written numerous articles in the area of Family law, Ethics, and Appellate Practice, and has been Guest Editor of special issues of the Florida Bar Journal dedicated to appellate practice and ethics.
When Ms. Cain first began practicing, she obtained her jury trial experience trying criminal cases, but has since expanded her practice to civil litigation and family law. This background in criminal law, has helped her assist clients in complicated family matters where domestic violence situations or other criminal issues may arise. She had one of the first cases in the Unified Family Division of the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, where a dissolution of marriage action, civil domestic violence action and dependency action were all filed in one case, in addition to an attempted first degree murder case against her client. This matter was ultimately successfully resolved for her client.
Ms. Cain is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator and is a member of the Collaborative Family Law Institute and the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators, the Florida Association for Women lawyers, Miami-Dade Chapter, the Dade County Bar Association, and is a Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America.
